The concept and applications of grid-connected photovoltaic systems have been brought into daily life by popularization. More and more households have installed power generation systems connected to the grid. Many inquirers consult during designing and installing, "Should a family photovoltaic system be equipped with a grid-connected cabinet?" Actually, it depends on its scale, function requirements, requirements for the photovoltaic system's connection to the grid, as well as the requirements placed by the local power grid company.
The grid-connected cabinet is a main device in the Grid-Connected Solar Power Generation System. Mainly, the device undertakes the management of the solar system in connecting or disconnecting to the electric network. Functions are mainly listed as below. Electrical protection : Has overloading, short circuit overvoltage, and more so functions to guarantee system safety.
Grid-tie control: realize the synchronization between the generation system and the grid power, such as voltage and current frequency consistency and phase consistency. Circuit breaker protection: cut off the grid accidents to avoid accidents. Energy metering: bi-direction meter records the electricity generation of the system and grid consumption. Real-time monitoring: real-time monitoring in operation can facilitate easy management and maintenance.
Advantages of Home Grid-connected Solar Systems
A house grid-connected solar system employs all the excess electricity it generates to feed back to the grid for efficient resource utilization. In case generation is not enough, one can draw power from the grid to meet household requirements. If there is extra generation, it could be sold to the grid by decreasing electricity bills. The system can be flexibly expanded in capacity according to demand, for example, adding photovoltaic modules or combining it with a storage system. The system works stably; the main maintenance work is cleaning of the photovoltaic modules. Subsidy policies and a preferential electricity price mechanism encourage installation in many countries and regions.
For residential users, whether an on-grid cabinet is required or not depends mainly on the following factors:
Small residential PV systems (3kW-10kW)
Usually do not need an independent grid-tie cabinet. Most small PV systems have the grid-tie function integrated into the grid-tie inverter, and most of them have such functions as built-in grid-tie protection, a circuit breaker, and an electricity meter.
Medium-sized residential PV systems (10kW-50kW)
If the scale of the PV system is larger or the local grid has higher requirements for the protection of grid connection, a small grid-connection cabinet may be necessary to provide additional safety guarantees.
If the following functions or requirements are contained in the home PV system, a grid tie cabinet may be necessary: Energy storage system: Store electricity with batteries.
Harmonic mitigation: optimize the power quality and reduce the interference to the grid.
Remote monitoring: it shall be equipped with communication module for data collection.
Some grid companies in some regions request that the home PV system should be equipped with grid-connection cabinet for satisfying the requirements of power flow protection and safe operation of the grid. In such case, the user has to follow the technical specification provided by grid company.
Most of the photovoltaic systems in the home adopt intelligent grid-connected inverters, which have integrated most of the functions required for grid connection (such as voltage and current detection, short-circuit protection, etc.) and do not need a separate grid connection cabinet.
Upgrading the Electricity Meter Box
Through such upgrading of the existing box on a home's electricity, necessary protection devices such as circuit breakers and surge protectors can be installed straight away; this is still more economical. ASET
Power grid companies usually offer comprehensive technical requirements on grid connection. If there are particular demands for independent circuit breakers, protection devices, and metering functions, the entire grid connection cabinet shall be configured separately.
The system installer or solar supplier will make their recommendation for the usage of a grid tie cabinet dependent on the size and respective load of the system
This option of going with integrated inverters would become far more economic and reasonable without mandatory requirements or any other functional requirement set-forth.
For ordinary household users, whose general power-connected capacity is below 10 kW, a single configuration to a cabinet on-grid isn't necessary. A proper connecting to the grid is made possible with the aid of on-grid inverters themselves. If the system size is larger or special functional requirements need to be met, a grid-connection cabinet can be used. Before installation, it is necessary to find out the requirements of the local grid company and communicate with the photovoltaic supplier in detail to design a reasonable scheme, so that household users can efficiently use solar energy to enjoy economic and environmental benefits brought by green energy.
